Buncombe Trails 55K Ultra Trail RunSunday, September 16, 2012 - 7:30 AM
Check-in starts at 6:30 AM
Trail Briefing at 7:15 AM
After a 2 year absence, The Buncombe Trail Run is back. Because both Buncombe and Enoree Passage start and finish at the same place, they will now be offered on alternating years, so 2012 will mark the return of Buncombe, followed by Enoree Passage in 2013.
The Buncombe Run starts and finishes at Brickhouse Campground in Sumter National Forest between Newberry and Spartanburg. The course is 100% trails with a 4 1/2 mile out-and-back connecting to a 25 mile loop. There are rolling hills, some rocks, some roots, stream crossings, maybe a few downed trees, but is shaded, scenic and very runnable. This trail is also for equestrian use, so expect some damage from horse traffic.
There will be 4 fully-stocked aid stations with a wide variety of food and drinks, plus 2 unmanned water stops. Carry at least one water bottle. Food at the finish. No cut-off times. Unique awards to all finishers.
Course is marked with blazes painted on trees plus some additional orange ribbons and orange flags.
Directions to Brickhouse Campground: Take Exit 60, SC Hwy 66 (Joanna) off of I-26, drive northeast 3.7 miles on SC Hwy 66 towards Whitmire. Watch for brown sign for Brickhouse Campground. At Forest Service Road 358, turn right (south) and follow the gravel road about 1/2 mile to the campground. There are 23 sites at the campground, vault toilets, no showers and no water (the well was removed a few years ago), cost is $5 per night. For those not camping, there is a day use parking lot that you pass before reaching the campground with a daily parking fee of $3.
Nearest motel accommodations are in Clinton, about 14 miles away, or Newberry, about 18 miles.
