Run along the wild and scenic Chattooga River in the mountains of South Carolina, passing by numerous waterfalls and through some of the most beautiful wilderness in the state. Course will be an out-and-back, following the Foothills Trail from Burrells Ford to Oconee State Park, approximately 16 miles each way, with about 8 miles along the river in each direction. Moderately difficult with some short, steep climbs, some longer, gradual climbs, rocks, roots and a few downed trees. . There will be 3 well-stocked aid stations with a variety of food and drinks, plus food at the finish. Carry at least one water bottle. There is also water from the Chattooga River, but it should be treated before drinking. Trail is marked with white blazes on trees, signs and with additional orange ribbons in places. All finishers will receive unique awards. Start/finish will be at Burrells Ford Parking lot. Parking is limited. There is primitive camping available there, but you must walk-in to the campground. Nearby, there is a larger campground with showers at Cherry Hill Recreation Area and camping and cabins at Oconee State Park. Directions to start: Coming from Walhalla on SC28, bear right onto SC107. Drive approximately 10 miles, turn left onto Burrells Ford Road, FS708. The parking area is 2 1/2 miles ahead on the left. FS708 is paved for .3 mile, then becomes a well-maintained gravel road.
