Long Cane 50K Trail Run
Saturday, May 17, 2014 - 7:00 AM
Run starts and finishes at the picnic shelter by the lake in Parson's Mountain Recreation Area in Sumter National Forest.
The course is a large figure-8 loop, plus a short out-and-back from the picnic shelter to the trailhead. The shaded trail covers diverse terrain, passing through the ancient hills and valleys that abut the upper Savannah River, and crosses the Long Cane Scenic Area with its tall trees and unusual vegetation. There are some rocks, some roots, stream crossings, road crossings, but a very runnable trail.
There will be 6 fully-stocked aid stations with a wide variety of both sweet and salty foods and drinks, food at the finish, no cut-off times and unique awards to all finishers. Mandatory to carry at least one water bottle.
In past years, I have also offered a 55 Mile run, consisting of the figure-8 loop, plus turning around at the trailhead and running the 23 mile outer perimeter of the course without doing the cut-through trail, making the course a total of 55 miles. Due to most runners dropping down to the 50K, this year, everyone will register for the 50K, but at Aid Station 6, will have the option to continue on if they choose. Runners who continue must let Aid Station staff know they are doing so and must be aware that there will be aid stations left for them, but the aid stations may be unmanned. There is a limit to how long I can expect my volunteers to stay out there, but I will wait for you at the finish.
Course is marked with white blazes painted on trees plus additional orange ribbons, orange flags and signs.
Directions to start: From Abbeville - Take SC Hwy 72 southwest for about 2 miles. Turn left (south) on SC Hwy 28, go about 2 miles, turn left on Parsons Mountain Road, Abbeville County S-1-251. Continue 1.5 miles to entrance of Parson's Mountain Recreation Area. Day use fee is $3. Be sure to pay the fee or you will probably get a ticket.
Accommodations: Camping at Parsons Mountain Recreation Area, first-come, first serve, no reservations can be made, 23 sites, flush toilets, showers, water, $7 fee per night. This is a nice campground, there is swimming in the lake, and a great place to bring the family for the weekend. Additional primitive camping nearby at Fell Hunt Camp, $5 fee per night. Motels in Greenwood and Abbeville.
As the old saying goes, "All good things must come to an end," so sadly I am going to end my directing of the Long Cane Run. This year will be my grand finale, however, I am in hopes that someone else will step up and take it over, so 2014 will not be the final Long Cane.
